Kathryn Kampovsky is a young, self-taught artist based in Atlanta, USA. Her figurative paintings incorporate elements of text and drawings, which overlay and complement skilfully-rendered portraits of her subjects. The graphic additions act as a commentary, suggesting clues to deeper and wider readings of the characters depicted.
'I feel compelled to create portraits that expose the way an individual is infinitely layered and complex, despite what they may or may not present outwardly,' states Kampovsky. 'I take issue with the way that we, as people, are inclined to organize others into boxes and labels, despite us all being made up of thousands of versions of themselves that cannot be boxed. My mission for my work is to highlight the inner complexity of my subjects by creating portraits that blatantly exhibit the parts of people that are hidden.'
